and obviously better than the never balancing budget obama and the democrats have proposed for the last four years. so you look at all the data out there. all the public opinion polls say that the american people think we're spending too much money. that the american people think that we are taxing too much. but the problem is that as republicans, i think this goes to what representative huelskamp just said, as republicans we have been seen as the party of big business. and we should never be the party of big business. we should be the party of individuals. the party that helps individuals have a fair share. we have a system that is unfair to small businesses, to individuals, we have a tax system that is unfair, we have a regulatory system that is unfair, and when republicans once again start talking about mainstream, about small businesses, about individuals, that's when we're going to win the fight. but if we keep representing big business if everything that comes out of the house seems like we're just -- that we're just worried about what job creators, i always tell the joke, we always us

, president obama plans to introduce legislation next week calling for the biggest changes to gun laws this country has seen in two decades. yesterday the president surrounded by children who wrote him letters after newtown urged congress to take action on a number of proposals including universal background checks for anyone buying a gun, restoring the ban on military-style assault weapons and limiting magazines to ten rounds, giving law enforcement additional tools to prosecute gun crimes and improving the mental health system for young people. >> so let's look at all of those items up there. richard wolffe, every one of them has overwhelming support of the american people. universal background checks. 85% of americans support that. restoring a ban on milita military-style assault weapons. that's a 60/40 proposition now. limiting magazines to ten rounds. almost 7 in 10 americans support that. additional tools for law enforcement. you know that's got to be an 80/20, 90/10 issue. the same with improving mental health services. i bring these numbers up only to say, once again, that my r

of the public statements we have seen since president barack obama said it was time for meaningful action to reduce gun violence, because what we have seen this many people argue the president is taking away our rights. i call this confusion, because many people apparently have not been reading the court cases that interpret the second amendment and tell us what it means. as larry and i argue in our contribution, the most popular proposals being considered today are likely constitutional. that is not to say there are not any questions about any of them, but they are likely to be upheld by the supreme court should they be enacted. from background checks to restrictions on sale of high- capacity magazines and even a ban on assault weapons, we think it is likely the supreme court will uphold these provisions. in defense of those who do seem confused about the nature of our second amendment rights, the supreme court has not done a great job of clarifying what is the scope of our second amendment rights. as most of you know, in 2008, the supreme court held that the second amendment protects th
